Tyre management is the practice of maintaining tyres to extend their lifespan, improve safety, and reduce operating costs through regular inspections, proper inflation, and correct maintenance procedures. Key aspects include ensuring correct tyre pressure, performing regular tyre rotations and wheel alignments, avoiding overloading, and conducting consistent inspections for wear and damage. Effective management also involves selecting the right tyre for the vehicle and conditions, and using systems to track performance and issues.

THE INITIAL PLANNING

Key tyre management practices

  • Maintain correct inflation:

Check tyre pressure frequently and adjust it to the manufacturer’s recommended level for the specific load and operating conditions. Under-inflation can shorten tyre life and increase fuel consumption.

  • Rotate tyres regularly:

This promotes even wear across all tyres, which extends their service life and helps maintain balanced handling.

  • Perform wheel alignment:

Regularly check and correct wheel alignment to prevent uneven wear caused by mechanical issues.

  • Balance tyres:

Have tyres professionally balanced to ensure smooth operation and prevent premature wear.

  • Inspect regularly:

Conduct frequent inspections for cuts, bulges, and abnormal wear. Check the age of your tyres, as they should not be used beyond a certain age (often 10 years).

  • Avoid overloading:

Do not exceed the vehicle’s load capacity, as this can cause premature and uneven tyre wear.

  • Adopt proper driving habits:

Avoid harsh braking, rapid acceleration, and other aggressive driving behaviors that can lead to premature tyre wear.

  • Select the right tyre:

Choose tyres appropriate for the vehicle’s type and the operating conditions to ensure optimal performance and safety.

  • Manage tyre age and repairs:

Be aware of your tyres’ age and track when they need to be repaired or replaced. Some tyres are suitable for retreading, which can be a cost-effective option.

  • Utilize technology:

Consider using modern technology like tyre pressure and temperature monitoring systems (TPMS) to provide real-time data on tyre performance.
